The planning is moving along for my US Road Trip that will take place in late March.
The original idea was to head from New Orleans through Texas and New Mexico to Albuquerque and then up over the mountains to Las Vegas.
When I looked in more detail I came up against 2 problems:
- There is a large additional fee for renting a car in one location and dropping off in another.
- The journey from Albuquerque to Las Vegas is very long - realistically requiring an overnight stop - and there's not much that I want to explore from a food point of view.
So I had a look around on the various car rental websites, Expedia and the SouthWest Airlines website and came up with a new plan - a looping Road Trip that begins and ends in New Orleans followed by a cheap flight to Vegas. Taking account of fuel costs, one way drop off costs and additional hotel costs this knocked almost £500 off the cost of the trip and also gives us more time to explore the short road from Austin to San Antonio, where there are towns such as Lockhart that have some of the best Texas BBQ around.
The trip now looks like this: New Orleans => Houston => Austin => San Antonio => Dallas => Jackson, Mississippi => New Orleans - drop off car and fly to Las Vegas to meet family arriving April 2nd.
I'll be posting links to some of the places we might decide to visit over the coming days annd weeks.
