Remember the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted and stopped European air traffic for a week due to the 'deadly cloud of dooooom!!'? Well, I ended up stranded in Los Angeles for almost a week because my Virgin Atlantic flight was cancelled.
Virgin were very good at helping the stranded passengers, they booked us into various airport hotels and paid for the room and hotel meals. After a day or so of hovering round the hotel just in case we were called upon to scramble to the plane people started to get bored and explore LA - if only to buy clean socks and underwear.
Hiring a car was cheaper than taxis for anything over a few miles so I rented an economy car and had a few days exploring. One of my favourite discoveries - the Mariscos El Sabroso Taco Truck - was parked only a few blocks from my hotel.
So what's special about the Mariscos El Sabroso Taco Truck? Well, it serves authentic Mexican food to people who work on the industrial estate where it is parked. Service is quick and the food is delicious.
I had fish tacos - each taco was made up of two corn tortillas with a big stack of fish and a little lettuce, a chunk of avocado and a pickled jalapeno on the side. The tacos are huge and almost impossible to pick up when fully loaded without spilling the filling over yourself - that's why they also provide a crispy tostada (fried corn tortilla) that you can use as a scoop to eat the taco filling until they are small enough to handle.
Not only is the food delicious, it's also very, very cheap. 3 tacos and a drink cost me about $6.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me so I couldn't take any pictures of the Mariscos El Sabroso Taco Truck. However, after a quick poke around on the internet I managed to find some great sources of additional information.
The 99 Cent Chef has a great blog post about the Mariscos El Sabroso Taco Truck with photos and video.
